Establishing mileage limits
Hosts decide for themselves how many miles/kilometres they allow a guest to drive per day, per week, and per month. You can change these limits prior to a trip being booked. Setting a limit won’t necessarily stop your guest from exceeding it, but we’ll compensate you when they do. Just present documentation and report the issue within 24 hours of the end of the trip.
You can also offer “unlimited mileage” to your guests as an Extra they can purchase. You set the price for this Extra; however, you cannot request reimbursement for excess distance driven if a guest has purchased unlimited mileage.
Setting an additional mileage fee
When you create your vehicle listing, we’ll automatically set a cost per mile/kilometre to be charged to a guest if they exceed the limit set for their trip. The automatic price per mile/kilometre is based on your car’s value, so it’s optimized to compensate you with the most appropriate fee.
Alternatively, you can set your own price for additional mileage; however, the maximum price you can set is the greater of either 2x our recommended price for your vehicle or $0.75 per mile/kilometre.* We cap this maximum at $3.00*. Specialty and classic vehicles may charge any amount up to $3.00* per mile/kilometre for excess distance.
To set your own price for additional mileage:
- Choose Vehicles from the Host dropdown menu
- Select the vehicle listing you want to edit
- Choose “Distance included” from the menu there
Changing your additional mileage cost for a vehicle won’t affect any booked trips or existing trip requests. Only trips requested or booked after you’ve made the change will be subject to the new additional mileage cost.
To offer unlimited mileage to your guests, choose ”Extras” from the menu inside the vehicle listing.
Turo will calculate the cost of the distance overage by multiplying the number of miles/kilometres driven over the limit by the additional mileage charge, up to $1,000.* If the total cost of additional distance exceeds this amount, we’ll charge the guest the greater of $1,000* or the difference in the value of the vehicle. Vehicle valuation is determined by Turo in conjunction with external evaluation sources.**
Hosts can use the Reimbursement tool to charge a guest for mileage overages. While guests can be charged up to a maximum of $1,000*, hosts can only use the Reimbursement tool to report mileage overages costing up to $500*, and the host's share of that amount depends on which Turo protection plan they’ve chosen.
If the mileage overage costs more than $500*, contact Customer Support directly within 24 hours of the trip end and submit pre- and post-trip photos of the car’s odometer that show that the guest exceeded the number of miles/kilometres included in the trip. If Turo must intervene in order to resolve the issue, hosts retain up to 85%*** of the total amount, not to exceed $1,000* or the car’s lost value due to excess mileage, whichever is greater. We’ll bill the guest for the extra miles/kilometres based on our calculations. We’ll also charge an administrative fee of up to $25* for processing the invoice.
In no event will Turo be responsible to the host for any mileage overages in excess of $1,000* or the car’s lost value due to excess mileage, whichever is greater, as explained above.
You are responsible for collecting payment for excess distance yourself if necessary, and should have your additional mile or kilometre cost posted clearly in your vehicle’s description.
*Values are in CA$ for trips in Canada, € (euros) for trips in Germany and all countries in the eurozone, £ (pounds) in the United Kingdom, and US$ for trips in the United States and all other countries where Turo is available.
** We use a number of third-party evaluation services to ensure that we take into account country-specific vehicle valuation and determine depreciation fairly.
*** Hosts in the US receive 65%, 75%, or 85% of the reimbursement, depending on which vehicle protection plan they’re enrolled in. Hosts in other countries receive 75% under our Standard plan.
