Host instructions: In-person check-in
The easiest way to conduct check-in is to use the Turo app on your mobile device. The app will walk you through the essential steps of check-in. It’ll show you the guest’s legal name and date of birth as they should appear on their license. This information will help you confirm your guest’s identity. Turo accepts foreign licenses, so if your guest presents one, follow the same verification process described here. If your guest has a temporary license, see specific verification instructions below. Otherwise, confirm that your guest’s license:
- is valid, hasn’t expired, and hasn’t been tampered with
- displays a name that matches the primary guest’s name on the trip
- has a photo that matches the person presenting it, particularly when compared against their date of birth
Host instructions: Contactless check-in
Message your guest within 24 hours before the trip starts to ask them to check in so you can review their license and confirm their identity. For your protection, we strongly suggest asking for verification photos as close to the trip start time as possible. Ask guests to upload:
- A close-up photo of their driver’s license with the first few digits of the license number obscured.
- A selfie with them holding their license next to their face.
Review your guest’s verification photos.Turo accepts foreign licenses, so if your guest presents one, follow the same verification process described here. If your guest has a temporary license, see specific verification instructions below. Otherwise, confirm that the guest’s license:
- is valid, hasn’t expired, and does not appear to have been tampered with
- displays a name that matches the primary guest’s name on the trip
- has a photo that matches the license photo of your primary guest, paying particular attention to their date of birth as compared to their photo

To protect their personal information, advise your guests to delete their license photos after you’ve verified their identity. Instruct them to go into their “Trip photos” and tap the trashcan icon in the upper right corner of the photo they want to delete. Turo Customer Support will still have access to the photos if needed, but deleting them will help protect their personal information and offer peace of mind about contactless check-in.
Do not grant vehicle access to any guest who:
- has uploaded photos more than 24 hours before the start of the trip
- has not uploaded the required photos
- asks for early access to your vehicle, which could void your protection plan (Find out how you can allow some guests to check in up to one hour early.)
Host instructions: Turo Go check-in
We verify guests before Turo Go trips. But if anything in guest messaging makes you uncomfortable or seems off, contact us. Let us know immediately if you think anyone other than your guest or their verified additional drivers plans to drive the car.
How to verify a temporary license
Turo accepts temporary licenses from some US states and from Canada. Canadian guests must always upload a photo of an additional government-issued photo ID. If your guest uploads photos of a temporary license, confirm that the license:
- is valid at the start of and through the end of the trip
- has no restrictions (e.g. no “daytime driving only,” no provisional licenses)
- has a photo directly on it
- US guests whose temporary license doesn’t have a photo must also upload a photo of a valid piece of government ID.
Help verifying a guest’s license
If you have any concerns about the validity of a license or the identity of the person presenting it, contact us. Hosts in the US and English-speaking hosts in Canada can chat with a Verification agent. French-speaking hosts in Canada can call 1-888-391-0460. There are apps available to help you determine if a license is valid. Here’s one for iOS and one for Android. Also, check out the photo examples below. They can be a helpful reference in determining if a license is valid.
