Changing trip length
If you’d like to change your trip length in any way -- start or end your trip earlier or later than originally scheduled -- you can request to do so. You can submit a change request before your trip begins or once it’s in progress. If your trip is in progress, you must submit a request for an earlier or later return time before the trip ends. Here’s how:
- Log into Turo.com on the web or via our mobile app.
- Navigate to your Trips tab and click or tap “Booked.”
- Select the trip you would like to change.
- Select the “Change trip,” "Modify trip," or “Change trip length” button. A pop-up window will appear.
- Enter your new end date and time, confirm the new cost (if applicable), and submit the request. You’ll be charged any new costs when you submit the request.
- The host will be informed of your request via an alert on Turo as well as via email and/or text messaging. Once the host approves your request, you’ll be good to go!
- If you request to extend your trip and your host denies your request, we’ll automatically process any applicable refunds.
- If you request to shorten your trip, we’ll process any applicable refunds as soon as your host accepts your request.
A trip change request expires eight hours from the time the request was made or by the time of the originally scheduled trip end, whichever comes first. Last-minute requests give hosts less time to respond. Plan to request a trip change as soon as you realize your needs have changed or that you’re running late.
No approval via messaging
An “OK” from your host via messaging does not count. A trip change is only considered valid if the request is made and approved through the Trips tab. Otherwise, our system won’t know about the change. In the case of an unapproved extension, you may be charged for the cost of additional usage when you don’t bring the car back at the originally scheduled time. In the case of an unapproved early return, Turo will be unable to refund you for any unused trip time.
Unanswered or denied requests
You won’t be able to book a trip extension if you have insufficient funds, another guest has booked the vehicle, your request expires, or the host declines the extension. If a host does not respond to or denies your trip change request, you must return the car at the scheduled end time for your trip. Returning the car late without an approved extension may result in your being charged a the cost of additional usage. Returning the car early without an approved trip change does not relieve you of your responsibility for any parking tickets or tow charges the car receives for up to 24 hours after the scheduled trip end time, nor will you receive a refund for the unused time.
The cost of extending depends on the length of the extension and on your host’s pricing. A host may charge different prices for different days, which might impact the cost of your extension. If there’s any additional cost as a result of your new trip end time, we’ll display it on screen as a separate line item before you submit your extension request. Sometimes there isn’t an additional cost, especially if it’s only a short extension, but it depends on what your new total trip length is with the extension.
Do I get money back if I end a trip early?
Once your host approves your trip change request, we’ll notify you and refund you for the trip’s unused time. If you were charged a deposit for your trip, we’ll refund the deposit 80 hours after the new, earlier trip end time, as long as your host doesn’t report any issues or damage. After Turo processes a refund, most banks take three to five business days to return the funds to your account. If you return the car early without an approved request, we’ll be unable to issue you a refund. Early check-in/checkout via the app
If a guest and host are ready to start or end the trip a little early, they can do so without processing a trip change by using the Turo app check-in/checkout feature. The check-in/checkout flow (available only in the mobile app) can be completed an hour from the start of the trip for early pickup and three hours before the end of the trip for an early return. The guest and host must communicate about and agree to the changes. Turo does not charge or credit hosts or guests for early pickups or drop offs arranged via the app check-in/checkout.
