Separation of host and guest coverage
The information below outlines the host and guest protection plans available through Turo. It’s important to choose the plan you feel is best for you without regard to any plan your host or guest may choose. Host and guest plans are in no way related. Host plans provide the host with contractual reimbursement options for physical damage to the car. Guest plans provide guests the opportunity to limit the amount they pay out of their own pocket for damage costs. The plans do not provide any insurance coverage from Liberty Mutual for the car.
Host Overview
- If you chose the Premium, Standard, or Basic plans (available before July 1, 2020), your plan includes third-party liability insurance coverage up to $1,000,000 for the Reservation and Delivery Periods.
- If you choose the 60 plan, 70 plan, 75 plan, 80 plan, or 85 plan (available as of July 1, 2020), your plan includes third-party liability insurance coverage up to $750,000 for the Reservation and Delivery Periods.
- Liability insurance coverage is offered by Liberty Mutual secured through Turo Insurance Agency an Arizona licensed producer and subject to terms and exclusions.
- Reimbursement for damage to your vehicle is not covered by a policy of insurance and instead is allocated via the contractual terms in the protection plan selected.
- Deductibles and reimbursement eligibility vary.
More detailed information about the Premium, Standard, or Basic plans is available by logging on to Turo and viewing the Vehicle Documents on the Details page for a booked trip. You can find complete information about our current host protection plans in the US.
Terms to know
Reservation Period
The Reservation Period begins at the trip start time listed in the reservation and when the Vehicle is in the custody or control of the Guest and ends the earlier of the trip end time or when the Vehicle is returned to either the Host or the location designated in the reservation. This is the period shown for a booked trip.
Delivery Period
The Delivery Period is the time when the host or designee, who is a Turo-approved driver, is actively delivering the car to the primary guest who has reserved delivery, and ends when the car has been delivered to the primary guest. The period doesn’t include the time when the host or designee is retrieving the car at the end of the trip. There is third-party liability insurance available during the Delivery Period if the guest books delivery in the reservation, but no contractual reimbursement for physical damage to the host’s car during the Delivery Period.

*Hosts must comply with Turo’s Terms of Service in order to be eligible for a protection plan.
**Turo is not an insurance company, and contractual reimbursement for physical damage to your vehicle is not insurance. We use the word deductible to mean the amount you are responsible for in the event of physical damage to your car during a Turo trip before you’re eligible for reimbursement. Turo will pay hosts for eligible physical damage costs in excess of the deductible, subject to terms and exclusions, for the lesser of the cost of repair up to the actual cash value of the vehicle or $125,000.
***Liberty Mutual liability insurance in the US is secured through Turo Insurance Agency, LLC, an Arizona licensed producer. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply. Liability coverage is up to $750,000 for all host protection plans, except in some states and at some airports that require additional coverage.
†If Physical Damage results from an “act of nature” (e.g., flood, earthquake, hail, windstorm, etc.), Turo will only be responsible for (and its liability is limited to) the amount equal to the amount (if any) that the Host’s private passenger auto insurer would have had to pay for that damage under the primary insurance policy covering the shared vehicle in effect immediately before the start of the Reservation Period.
Primary guest overview
Guests are responsible for any eligible damage that occurs during the trip. This is not based on fault. The guest protection plans offer guests the opportunity to limit or remove their out-of-pocket costs for any eligible damage that occurs during the trip. A guest’s responsibility and costs under a protection plan are separate and not related in any way to the terms of the host's chosen protection plan.
If you choose the Premier plan, your plan includes third-party liability insurance coverage up to $750,000 and the plan is primary to any personal insurance you may have for physical damage costs. This plan is not available for trips in vehicles with a total market value of more than US $25,000.00 or to drivers below the age of 21.
- If you choose the Standard or Minimum plan, your plan includes the minimum amount of third-party liability insurance coverage required by the state where the car is registered and is secondary to any personal insurance you may have.
- Liability insurance coverage is provided by Liberty Mutual in the US and secured through Turo Insurance Agency, an Arizona licensed producer, and is subject to terms and exclusions.
- Plans available for drivers ages 18-20 vary as shown below.

***Turo is not an insurance company, and the contractual allocation of responsibility for physical damage to the host’s vehicle is not insurance. Your responsibility for physical damage to the car is up to the Actual Cash Value of the car but can be covered by all other available insurance to you and, if you have no other forms of available insurance, will be capped by your out-of-pocket maximum noted above, if any.
Commercial Host trips
You may book a trip with a Commercial Host. These hosts provide their own rental liability insurance to guests. If you book with a Commercial Host, check the listing or with the Commercial Host for information about coverage limits, exclusions, and costs.
